Assam Launches Census 2027 Self-Enumeration; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma urges public participation

Guwahati 3 Aug, 2026 : Assam has begun the online self-enumeration process for Census 2027, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urging residents to complete the exercise accurately during the 15-day window before door-to-door verification begins.

The online self-enumeration facility, launched by the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam, is available from August 2 to August 16 through the official Census portal. Residents can submit household and individual details online before the House Listing and Housing Census Operations (HLO), scheduled from August 17 to September 15.

After completing his own self-enumeration, Sarma appealed to people across the state to participate in the exercise and provide accurate information. In a social media post, he encouraged residents to complete the process from their homes and contribute responsibly to the nationwide Census.

Director of Census Operations, Assam, Biswajit Pegu said the initiative is aimed at making Census 2027 more participatory, citizen-centric and convenient. Residents who complete the online process will receive a unique 11-digit Self-Enumeration (SE) ID through SMS or email. The SE ID must be retained and presented to the census enumerator during the field verification stage.

The self-enumeration portal will remain open daily from 6:00 am to 12:00 midnight and is available in Assamese, English and 14 other Indian languages. During the house-listing phase, trained enumerators will visit households to collect or verify the information submitted online.

Officials said all information collected during the Census is protected under the Census Act, 1948, which provides statutory safeguards for individual data. They also reminded residents that providing false information, refusing to answer census questions truthfully or obstructing census officials is punishable under the Act.

The online self-enumeration process, training programmes and other preparatory activities have been postponed in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts due to the prevailing flood situation. Revised dates for these districts will be announced later.

Residents requiring assistance with the self-enumeration process can contact the Census helpline at 1855.
